Gratitude Practice: Three Good Things

Gratitude Practice: Three Good Things

We are thinking creatures. The job of the mind is to formulate thoughts. Although, not all thoughts are held in equal standing. Negative experiences and images are more heavily weighted in our being than positive experiences of the same intensity.  This is due to an evolutionary concept called negativity bias. Simply put, our brain has a much greater sensitivity to negative occurrences than positive ones.   In certain situations this is a useful tool to avoid and prevent danger.  For those times when we are not being chased by a wild beast or being burned by a flame, negativity bias can pose as a danger upon our attitude, emotions, and our relationships, if we allow an untrained mind to rest in that space. We all know the festering feeling that can turn our mental state south, stunt our ability to forgive others, and steal joy.

A practice in gratitude can begin to override negativity bias by outweighing it with more pleasant sentiments.  A helpful technique called “Three Good Things” is described below.  Before practicing, I would recommend revisiting my post on gratitude from last year.  This will give you the proper framework for what true gratitude is and what it is not. As you begin this practice it is important to reside in truth, in the what is, rather than in a false ideal by discrediting pain and suffering. This is a practice about acknowledging the positive that too often gets overruled by the negative.

Farro Salad with Roasted Grapes and Lacinato Kale

Farro Salad with Roasted Grapes and Lacinato Kale

// When it comes to the Thanksgiving meal and its dishes, the members of my family are traditionalists who just tweak old recipes. The menu is like many others: turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, pie, store-bought Hawaiian rolls (who are we kidding, we all love these), and an abundance of gravy.

To prepare for this year, I did more than just fancy up a classic, I decided to implement a whole new dish with this salad. Farro is a common Italian grain that is acclaimed for its nutty flavors and chewy texture.  Its hearty, delicious, and can stand against any super grain in the nutrition department.  Coupled with the plump, roasted grapes that simply burst in your mouth, and the earthy, sweet lacinato kale, this salad is a winner and a beauty on any holiday table.

Riesling: A Wine for the Holiday Table

//Uttana Shishosana: Puppy Pose or Melting Heart Pose

Hello again, Gratitude. You’re the friend I’m reminded of this time of year, and the one I try never to forget.  You seep into my practice daily, working your magic through each posture to yoke me to the Creator.  Gratitude reminds me that my practice is enough, that my breath is enough, and that I am enough.  More than enough: worthy of wild, unadulterated praise.

Uttana Shishosana (puppy pose) is a simple, feel good motion that stretches the shoulders and spine, invigorates the mind, and relieves stress, tension, and insomnia.  Also referred to as melting heart pose, this mild inversion invites the opening of your heart to the earth and the humbling of your being to the heavens.  In this reorientation of the body, we are able to recognize an imperative notion to believing in gratitude, that we are all connected and bound together by something greater than ourselves. With our heart open to the earth, we receive all of its bounty, we acknowledge that we are not alone and that our existence and breath is nourished by all creatures great and small.  In this I am humbled and grateful.

Homemade Popcorn

Homemade Popcorn

//Popcorn is a staple in our household. At least once a week you will find me winding down the evening with a bowl in front of me.  It’s amazing on all accounts. It is a healthy snacking option, and for me, it is full of nostalgia--warm, fuzzy feelings from the past that permeate the present. Moments of sitting with family and friends, snuggled on the couch, with a good movie or fire entertaining the night.
